Dunny became a soldier in the troops to France. At the beginning he was lonely, could not make a long lasting friend in the army. He felt bored and the only thing he could do was reading New Testament.
Once he was on a mission to clear out a German machine gun nest, he approached the target and was hit by a flare. Before his black out he saw the statute of Madonna with Mrs. Dempster’s face. He believed it was Mrs. Dempster’s miracle.
After he wake up it was 6 months later, he lost his left leg and was thought to be dead by the army. He was awarded with a Victoria Cross. In the hospital he got to know with Diana, the nurse who took care of him. They was in love for a while, Dunny found Diana was too much like a mother for him, so he decided to retreat.
After Dunny recovered from his injury and received the Victoria Cross, he went back to Canada and received a grand welcome. Percy told Dunny he and Leola was engaged. Dunny was told Paul Dempster ran away from his home. Mrs. Dempster was worried. After Masa Dempster passed away, her aunt came to take care of her.
